Oh please. The 'attack on the left' of 1947 is entirely consistent with more than a century of American history. In the 19th century, our gov killed more strikers than Tsarist Russia. The Palmer raids, etc., were an enormous crackdown on radical agitation. The New Deal era was a historical anomaly in its emphasis on collectivity and mild state intervention on the working class's behalf, and after the war was over, it was time to start going back to business as usual.

And Max's reference to geological time was a funny way of making the point that the sense of temporal spaciousness that its proponents were offering was ludicrous. You can't have a six-decade crisis.

Why invent straw men when your interlocutors do it for you?
