I think I'm being dense here, but Napoleon Bonaparte was an arrivist Corsican junior army officer (although subsequent Bonapartes and Bonapartists were aristocrats of course).

I was making a joke about Roosevelt, not a historical point. Though FDR's class origins probably had a lot to do with why he had the nerve to be a (partial) class traitor. As Adorno said, you have to have tradition in you to hate it properly. Not that FDR was Adorno, of course.
