I just saw Niall Ferguson's The Ascent of Money on PBS (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/ascentofmoney/), and it is well worth watching. While there are several issues with Ferguson's story of global financial history, the most immediate to mind was his avoidance of addressing deregulation of the financial services sector at all. His analysis could also have been really much more insightful if it had considered the processes of global financialization.
