The large privately-held corporations - Volkswagen, Siemens, Opel,
Daimler-Benz, Krupp, Bayer, IG Farben, Fiat, Marconi, Olivetti, Pirelli,
etc. - all flourished in the wartime economies of Germany and Italy, in
close alliance with the Nazi and Fascist regimes. The big bourgeoisie
supported the accession to power of the fascists and the consequent
destruction of the independent trade unions and anticapitalist parties. The
German corporations which employed slave labour and equipped the death camps
were later prosecuted after the war. The large landed estates in both
countries remained intact.

By contrast, in the Soviet Union and China, the capitalist and landlord
classes were fully expropriated and large-scale private ownership ceased to
exist until it began to be restored in each country at the end of the
twentieth century.

If this crucial distinction between fascism and communism, between right and
left, is not quite clear to David and Raghu, it was crystal clear to the big
industrialists, financiers, and landowners in those societies, whose
existence turned on it.

Shhh. Quiet, Lou. David's declaring victory. Let him have this moment.

I think in the narrow sense of demonstrating the inadequacies of a
naive left-right spectrum, David is quite justified in declaring
victory.
