It's true that it was Thoreau who said that "The mass of men lead
lives of quiet desperation," in his WALDEN. But he's across the pond,
as it were. Seriously, I wasn't referring to Thoreau as much as his
phrase's status as a (minor) cliché. And, digging deeper, I think that
a lot of people who _really_ live with style (e.g., celebrities) are
covertly living lives of quiet desperation.
