Well I may be stupid, but from my stupid perspective it is very clear that 
this is another attempt at "regime change", this time on the basis that, 
rather than having the majority of the people against you, you have a good 
chunk (perhaps a majority) of the people supporting you.

The idea of blasting away some of Gaddafi's army units in advance is that, 
by the time talks or negotiations start between the warring partners, the 
opposition has already achieved a strong bargaining position.

>From what I can gather though, some of the things the "allied" forces are 
doing in Libya cannot be squared with the UN resolution at all.

So there is not just "substitutionism" at the level of the US, UK, French 
govts etc. but also at the level of the UN. What we are getting into here, 
is politicians operating "above the law" on the basis of the idea that it's 
for "the greater good of humanity".

Question is, how do they know? Well, they don't know, but they try to make 
their idea true.
