I have heard that FDR claimed/thought that making it nominally an insurance program would protect it. But all illusions/delusions can be manipulated by those who control the media and the state.
But I was only a bit facetious in my earlier post. A leaflet size explanation tearing away the myth of "insurance" would be of great value. This is going to be an ongoing battle, and we need ammunition for it. Surprisingly perhaps, the clearest explanation of the myth was by a former president of the American Econics Association (or whatever they call it) published as an op-ed in the WSJ back in the '80s.
