Thanks everyone for your interesting responses. Everyone (including Hans) basically confirmed what I thought but Marx is tricky. With him you get screwed up the most when you think you understand what he said but you really don't.
Special thanks to Hans. I sat in on your class on Marx at U of U nearly two years ago and found it very interesting. I'd be interested in being an observer on your upcoming class. re:energy in Marx. What you say is true, which is interesting because he knew the American school of political economy who were technology and energy theorists (earlier in volume one he has a funny insult for "Carey and the harmonizers"). Based on my reading of them (and knowing he knew them) I think he may have felt that emphasizing the role of energy would slip into their type of "potential class harmony" view. My professor came out last year with a book called "energy and the wealth of nations" which I think is quite good. -- -Nathan Tankus -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
