Regarding the question between coal and labor, I heard an intereview some
time ago about the role of coal and social democracy; miners (mostl in
Europe) organizaed giving a base for pressuring for labor.  The shift to
oil meant that fewer workers were needed and they did not physically work
as closely as miners.

That might be related to what Paul said.  Perhaps he or someone else here
recalls the book.
