can really be unbounded. Only the *top* level can be
a list, rather than an array.
Since any two levels can have a relationship
...->[0]->[0]->...
...->[0]->{X}->...
...->{X}->[0]->...
...->{X}->{X}->...
that calls for AoA, AoH, HoA, HoH.
