Also do not forget to dictate containers. Best to avoid bamboo, wood, willow,
wicker or cellulose as not to introduce wood destroying insects into
collections. JTV

Interesting challenge. I'd ask more information about the mesh that will cover
the potted plants. What would be the composition of the mesh and size of the
openings? What will be left uncovered (e.g. around the stems, beneath the
bottom)? Dermestid beetles can chew through some kinds of materials.

Will the plants be near items at risk? If in a hall with marble sculptures, I'd
not have any concerns. Amongst your paintings or textile collections, however,
I'd do my best to opt for synthetic plants.

If real plants are required / demanded, then simply put them under glass (an
air-tight display case). That's a good compromise.

Subject: [pestlist] Plants for Functions and Events

Hi folks

I’ve had a very interesting request regarding plants for events in our
galleries.

Events have been asked by an organisation who would like to limit using cut
flowers for sustainability reasons and have been asking what alternatives could
be used.

We have a policy for plants which have to be clean and with no pollen stamens
and most importantly no soil – hence cut flowers

It would be useful to see other policies and guidelines if you are prepared to
share them as I want to find appropriate compromise

The proposal at the moment is potted herbs and plants where the soil is covered
with a mesh and purchased from a reliable supplier

Thanks

Adie
