Another recommendation would to be only allow cut flowers from approved vendors
 - no home grown flowers or wild flowers. Most nurseries and florists have
flowers that are grown with systemic pesticides that make them less appealing
to insects. Also, see the following Connecting to Collections Care talk – it
addresses this question.

Subject: [pestlist] Re: Plants for Functions and Events

When we had a potted plant in an exhibition, we asked that they were repotted
in fresh sterilised soil (as we were under the assumption any heat or chemical
treatment would kill off pests). We also stipulated no watering in the
galleries. This was in a gallery with no daylight, so we ended up having a few
that could be switched out so they didn't die!

Hi folks
I’ve had a very interesting request regarding plants for events in our
galleries.
Events have been asked by an organisation who would like to limit using cut
flowers for sustainability reasons and have been asking what alternatives could
be used.
We have a policy for plants which have to be clean and with no pollen stamens
and most importantly no soil – hence cut flowers
It would be useful to see other policies and guidelines if you are prepared to
share them as I want to find appropriate compromise
The proposal at the moment is potted herbs and plants where the soil is covered
with a mesh and purchased from a reliable supplier
Thanks
Adie
