Hi Samantha, There will be no hazard from the low temperature treatment (-20C to -30C). Bagging the objects in 4 to 6 mil polyethylene will protect them from high humidity should the freezer fail, and will allow the wood objects to buffer the remaining space inside the bag. If you have any moisture sensitive areas or feel the object construction warrants further protection - a wrap of tissue or cotton fabric will respond first to control any moisture exchange leaving the bulk of the object unaffected. I am currently doing support work for the National Park of American Samoa and it has come to my attention that three larger wooden artifacts in the collection that show signs of wood-boring beetle damage. The objects are two bas-relief carvings and a kava bowl. The carvings measure 80-90 cm long, 40 cm wide and 6-10 cm thick. They are carved from teak. The kava bowl measures about 16 cm tall with a diameter of 43 cm. The type of wood is unknown. Is freezing a viable option or do we risk cracks or splits in the artifacts? If we need to look at fumigation or anoxia for treatment, are there any service providers in Honolulu (where the artifacts are currently stored) that anyone has experience with? Thanks very much for your help.
