We have a similar problem with mice at our off-site facility in a rural area. I recently came across a collection that had an abandoned mouse nest. While the artifacts were in polyethylene bags, the mice at through a couple of bags and left droppings next to and/or on the artifacts. We removed the bags and replaced with new ones, but the object is compromised. They have also left droppings on oversized ground stone. We clean by using a HEPA vacuum. We do not use any cleaning agents on the artifacts. The mice also made a nest in one of our dioramas (in storage). The mess was so extensive, we will have to dispose of the entire piece. States with high incidences of this disease reported to the CDC are in descending order: NM, CO, AZ, CA, WA, MT, TX, UT, NV, ID and OR. In the East, PA leads the way with 9 cases, NY has 3 and the remaining states 1. Mice infected with hantavirus are a known problem in the region where this museum is located. I understand that UV exposure is an effective way to degrade the virus but I wanted to know if anyone has any further recommendations for treating/cleaning objects exposed to infected mice. Thanks for your help, Beth Holford ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To send an email to the list, send your msg to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> To unsubscribe from this list send an email to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> and in the subject put: "unsubscribe" - no quotes please.
