There is an excellent contribution on hantavirus by Jo Ann Martinez-Kilgore in
Archives Conservators Discussion Group 2005: Hazardous
Holdings<http://cool.conservation-us.org/coolaic/sg/bpg/annual/v24/bp24-13.pdf>.
You may also search mentions and review papers by The AIC Health and Safety
Committee<http://www.conservation-us.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=page.viewpage&pageid=751>
. The worker should consult with an industrial hygienist to conduct a Job
Hazard Analysis, review protocols to limit exposure and cross-contamination,
and receive training in how to evaluate, purchase and properly use personal
protective equipment (PPE).

Elizabeth -

You may want to go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website,
www.cdc.gov<http://www.cdc.gov>, where you will find lots of info about Hanta
virus. States with high incidences of this disease reported to the CDC are in
descending order: NM, CO, AZ, CA, WA, MT, TX, UT, NV, ID and OR. In the East,
PA leads the way with 9 cases, NY has 3 and the remaining states 1.

Dear Pestlisters,

A colleague working at another museum has been faced with the problem of

cleaning a diorama populated with museum objects, reproductions and props that

have been in contact with mice (droppings, gnawing, etc.). Mice infected with

hantavirus are a known problem in the region where this museum is located. I

understand that UV exposure is an effective way to degrade the virus but I

wanted to know if anyone has any further recommendations for treating/cleaning

objects exposed to infected mice.

Thanks for your help,

Beth Holford
