1. The language. It is competent. It is complete. Has full
library support. It is portable.
I don't think the same can be said for ecmascript.
Just in case anyone gets the wrong idea, although I suggested JavaScript
(which is an implementation of ecmascript) for Mark's problem, I
wouldn't dream of proposing it for the kind of heavy lifting that Java
can do. If you've got a heavyweight requirement Java can be a very good
choice.
Java has been called "the new COBOL". If you know how pervasive COBOL
became and why (and how widely it is *still* used), you'll realise just
how much of a compliment that description is to Java.
Like Dave, I'm also not suggesting Java is the only good solution. PHP,
Perl, Python and Ruby all have their place, but there are good reasons
why Java is popular for "Enterprise Class" IT.
With regard to JSP and Java-based servers, I would sound one word of
warning. If you want to do anything out of the ordinary, I found
figuring out the configuration files a royal pain - not far short of the
horrors of configuring Sendmail without using the m4 macros! However, YMMV.
