I have always had mixed feelings on this, having been admin for a list for very low-tech users in the past (ie where email is new to them, never mind lists). Of-course they're running badly behaved software, so they reply to list mail and it never reaches the list, and they don't understand why. So I've got used to reply to munging.
I also understand and agree with the counter arguments. Basically the problem is that the most common software is not fit for purpose. The debate boils down to whether or not the rest of the world should compensate for this, and I'm in two minds on that score.
Either way, I didn't choose the current setting but I can change it. I won't change the status quo without warning or debate, though.
