Umm not as easy as it seems!
Installed what we suggested, and if I select:
System -> Preferences -> Desktop effects I get a pop up box saying:
"The Composite extension is not available"
Under system tools I have Beryl Manager and Beryl Settings manager
Beryl manager seems to give me access to the settings, but nothing
happens. How do I get the Composite extension installed?
The restricted drivers section tells me that I do have NVIDIA installed
and working. However, the web suggests:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals --composite
Note the reference to composite
I am wondering about my NVIDIA install. I was not happy about it from
the start as I was stumbling along in teh dark.
I note from Synaptic I have "NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org driver"
installed.
There is a "NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org 'new' driver" available.
Should I use this?
If so do I simply do the apt-get command above or use Synaptic, and will
either of them un-install the old ones or what!!

I'm having no problems with "the older one". I'd recommend sticking with
something that's maintained and tested by Ubuntu unless you have a
problem you have reason to believe is fixed in a newer version that you
can't access through Ubuntu's repositories.
When I get chance I'll do a fresh 7.04 install here in the office to
play with.
