Try an stay away from the System -> Preferences -> Desktop effects, they are just built-in effects but they are separate from beryl.
To start beryl, all I had to do was ALT + F2 then type beryl-manager in the run dialog. Then it all kicks off and I can spin my cube, wobble my windows, and 3d my windows. To configure the beryl settings you get a red diamond thing in the toolbar at the top and you can right click that and ther are some setting on there, sorry I dont have ubuntu booted at the moment as I cant get on to the network with it yet. Have a look at the forum/how-to link I sent in the previous mail and run through that and see if you missed anything out. Anyone know how to fade windows? Cheers Richard
