Thanks for your input Dan it wasnt gmplayer, but Beryl. The only way I coudl resolve this was to right click on the red diamond in my system tray sort of area, choose "select window decorator" and choose "GTK Window Decorator", then "Select Window Manager" and choose "Compiz".
Dont get me wrong beryl is still very cool. its just that the transparency is a bit ropey, for example, I can make a window transparent, but it doesnt display right, unless I move the window about it looks fine, as soon as I let teh window go, it goes all wierd. Now as soon as I select Compiz as my window manager I can play videos and have a transparent terminal window on top it works fine, but I have now found that fixing one problem has caused another, I can no longer rotate my desktop as a cube! I am guessing that this is configurable right? And I am also guessing that the Beryl Configuration is separate from Compiz configuration. Anyone know where I need to configure 3D desktops in Compiz? Also I would rather use Beryl to be honest, if only I can get transparency to work properly. Incidentally, its nothing to do with gMplayer, it is the same with any window I make transparent. In fact, gMplayer was a solid window, the foreground window which was the terminal windows was actually set to transparent. Beryl doesnt seem to like it but Compiz does, yet compiz isnt as feature rich as Beryl, or at least I dont quite know how to configure Compiz to be that cool. -- ***** Richard Forth "I used to be indecisive, but now, I''m not so sure!" *****
