Not to worry about the delay. It is still not working!
I am not sure how to proceed with this! Unless someone has a bright
idea, I may shelve it for a while until my skills catch up with my
aspirations!
Just to add (unhelpfully!) that I have so far created dozens of
Linux-based virtual machines with VMWare (many flavours of Linux) both
using Linux and Windows as a host, and never had a problem with the
network. Which makes it hard to offer advice as its an area I've not had
much experience fault-finding.
Many Linux distro developers run inside virtual machines (eg for testing
installations etc) so the drivers required for VMWare are probably some
of the best tested there are.
I think the best strategy may be to forget that the PC is virtual and
fault-find a standard network connection.
What does ifconfig tell you? What does route tell you? What do the same
commands on your host tell you? ("ipconfig /all" and "route print" if
your host is Windows based)
"Network is unreachable" is (I think) a routing problem, suggesting that
your TCP/IP stack is up and running OK but not on a subnet that can
communicate with the outside world.
