This has persisted throughout several versions of Ubuntu, right from my
first installation of Edgy.

I was beginning to suspect a hardware problem, because I also get
occasional, and again completely random, system freezes. My power supply
failed yesterday and I thought that might have been the cause. But I
installed a new PSU this morning and am still getting the same problems
with sound. Coincidentally, I also had one freeze about an hour ago.

If this isn't a software problem, then I guess I have an intermittent
fault on the mother board.

I think you said you were given the choice of two sound cards - do you have onboard sound and a sound card as well ?

My other thought is to check the IRQs allocated to different devices in case there is a conflict. Some BIOS give you a list on the POST screen otherwise I'm sure someone will tell us how to find in Linux - does lspci show them up ?
