Ever since I started using Linux (Ubuntu) about eighteen months ago, I
suffered what seems to be a completely random problem where the sound on
my machine is disabled after booting. Sometimes it can take up to six
re-bots before the sound eventually returns. I've made several attempts
to track down the cause and have raised the issue on Ubuntu forums
several times, all without success.

Yesterday, after having failed to get sound going for two whole days, I
started poking around the settings yet again. I discovered that if I go
into the Sound Preferences dialogue and select p16v from the list, I can
get the test sounds to work, even though other applications, such as
Amarok, Skype or movie player, still remain silent. One odd exception
seems to be .wmv files. For some reason, if I play one of these, the
sound works!

This morning I booted up and lo and behold, the sound is back again.
It's driving me slowly nuts, so if anyone has any ideas on what might be
causing this, I would be most grateful for suggestions.

The machine has an AMD Athlon XP processor, and a RagePro 9800 graphics
board. Device Manager lists the sound device as : VT8233/A/8235/8237
AC97 Audio Controller. It also lists Creative Labs SB Audigy. I've also
attached a screenshot of the KDE Control Module Sound screen.
