I think the log file most likely to show up any problems will be syslog. Next time a failure occurs I'll note the time and post the log.
I do have two sound cards. One is on board and the other is part of the Radeon RagePro 9800. If this is an IRQ conflict, then wouldn't it happen consistently, instead of being apparently random?
