That was it! I managed to disable the on-board sound card via the BIOS settings. Since then, not a single sound failure. Still got to solve the problem of the occasional system crash, but that's about the only issue left to sort.
I tried out Clonezilla yesterday. As a backup for an entire system it works pretty well. I've tried a few other apps, including Remastersys, but am still looking for something that will create a live cd from my existing set-up. If anyone has used something successfully, I'd be interested to hear about it.
