Updating the BIOS in an RM machine to the "latest" didn't give me a PXE
LAN boot, nor did patching etherboot into the BIOS (which has no PXE
boot built in).
So it looks like I'm left with putting a ROM on the NIC, changing the
NIC or sticking to the IDE module solution. The last one works fine, and
isn't that much more expensive (if at all) than the others.
The RM machine NICs have a 28 pin ROM socket. Their PCI Vendor/Device ID
is 1113/1211 (rev 10) it has a Realtek 8139 chipset and is identified by
http://rom-o-matic.net/ as a SMC1211-1 card.
I've read of someone using an Intel 10/100 NIC in these machines for
Edubuntu thin client via a flash update to the NIC, but I don't have one
to hand.
