for me having space around [ ] improves readibility.
I preferred

methodDeclaration
   [
   methodbody
   ]

over

methodDeclaration
   [ methodbody ]

Especially in case of method body is blockish like while true/exception.

But this is ok if people prefer

methodDeclaration
   [ methodbody ]


Now I do not like

methodDeclaration [
   methodbody ]
