For diff/merge the icons currently represent:

green left arrow - modification: use existing definition/code-fragment (code 
fragment compositing still not implemented... not easy).
green right arrow - modification: use incoming definition/code-fragment
red X - removal
green tick - addition

I 'm also really confused by the diff merge icons so do you have a
