Why is it that I don't have sound support when the machine reboots, and
have to re-run redhat-config-soundcard?

This is the second machine I've had this problem on, and they're very
different (K6/Ensonique vs K7/VIA AC97) in terms of hardware.
Everything works nicely once I've re-run the config program, and it
produces the same modules.conf file every time, so I have some trouble
understanding what the problem might be.

Anyone else observed this?

Are you running GNOME or KDE?

Neither; mostly KDE apps under AfterStep.

I have an AC97 type of card also and it seems to work with every boot.

The card -- well, chip, it's built in to the FX21 motherboard -- works
fine; the problem is something to do with the sound modules being
loaded, and I really can't figure out how the configuration program can
load those without difficulty and the initscripts can't.

My sound chip is integrated into the motherboard also. Sorry about the "card" reference. Kudzu references this for my card. How do you find out what motherboard type you have in phoebe?

class: AUDIO bus: PCI detached: 0 driver: i810_audio desc: "Intel Corp.|82801AA AC'97 Audio" vendorId: 8086 deviceId: 2415 subVendorId: 15d9 subDeviceId: 5933 pciType: 1

I don't know much about the initscripts. I used to go into a terminal, run setup, choose sound configuration, listen to the sound. Then all was well.

I upgraded from 8.0 up to phoebe3. So this might be a bug caused by the elimation of some program from 8.0.

I just went back to get sndconfig from 8.0, to be safe. There was no problems installing the program. I guess you got to keep a better eye on what will disappear next.

BTW - there was some erratta for the older kernel for RH8.0, the eratta came out today. We aen't getting any eratta protection for this beta.

I got this off of the beta channel.
