FWIW, I also have the VIA VT8233 sound chip on my Shuttle motherboard (I won't
be able to verify that it's identical to yours until I get home this evening). I
couldn't get it to work under RH8.0 until I installed alsa, but phoebe picked it
up on install and it works on every boot. If there is any information or config
file that I can send you that might help, please let me know.

I'm not using a 2.5 kernel, but the one that came with phoebe3 (again, the
version would have to wait until I get home). I don't know if that makes a
difference.
