Absolultely wrong, Randy. Restoration is something I do for a living. Couldn't let this go unanswered. A shellac disc, no matter how damaged the grooves are, cannot hurt a DIAMOND stylus with a vtf of 3g or so. Warped discs can prematurely wear out the cantilever's suspension after a long while if played extensively, and playing a cracked disc would hurt any equipment used, obviously, whether a steel needle/soundbox or modern sylus/cantilever. But playing a (relatively flat, uncracked) stripped out, grey-grooved record with modern equipment doesn't hurt anything but one's ears. There's enough misinformation out there already -- let's not purvey it in here as well. Best, r.
