Personally, I love PayPal as a buyer. I do not sell on ebay so perhaps I have a different view of things. It is by far the easiest and safest way to buy on ebay. I always check auctions and if they do not accept PayPal I have to really want the item to bid on it. And, I never bid on items that require money orders or cashiers checks. It is too inconvienient and leaves me with no recourse if there are any issues.
As for phonograph "stuff" on ebay, I have rarely bought a phonograph, but I have bought a lot of parts and related paper and advertising items that I would never have seen in a lifetime of collecting.
