I have owned some cylinders that need to be reamed out a bit. They tend to
shrink a bit with age.

As far as the skipping, I would first try to make sure that nothing is hanging
up on your machine. When the stylus is in the up position, does the carriage
seem to float back and forth freely when you move it with your finger? If not,
try cleaning and lubricating the parts that slide with a fine machine oil. I
usually apply it to a soft, lint free cloth and then rub it on gently.

Does the reproducer turn freely in the end of the horn? If not, try to clean
and lubricate that fitting.

Next, check the hinge block on the reproducer to see it it moves back and forth
on the hinge pin. It shouldn't be tight and unmovable.

If those all check out, it may need an adjustment to the half nut. I'll let
one of the real experts in the group describe that process, as I've never done
that.

Usually, dirt or lack of proper lubrication is the enemy of proper operation.
If the parts are all clean and well (but not over) lubricated, playback should
be successful.

I had an auto mechanics teacher in high school who always said "check the
smallest, stupidest things first. Loose wire, lose hose, etc." I always check
the small easy to do things before tearing into a machine.

I hope that this helps.
Tom

  Subject: [Phono-L] Amberola 30 help!

Just got my "new" Amberola 30. This is my first Amberola and I have a
problem. Everything seems fine until I try to play a cylinder. First, the
cylinders do not fit on the spindle properly... they fir tightly and will
not fit
  completely on the spindle.

When I try to play the cylinders, they seem to skip and are not really
playable. I cleaned the stylus which made the sound clearer, but still
distorted.
   Any ideas?

I may me doing the whole thing wrong... I've been known to screw up now and
again, but I do have (and know how to use) two-minute machines!
