I assume you are attempting to play 4 min Blue Amberols on your Amberola 30.
The plaster core of BA's tends to swell over the years, causing them to not
fit on the spindle properly.  This is very common with these records.  The
simplest solution is to purchase a cylinder reamer from a phono parts dealer
and carefully ream out the core until it fits on the mandrel.  Some people
do not like to use a reamer, in the belief that this will cause the core to
not be perfectly round and the record will then fit on the mandrel off
center.  So one can just use fine sandpaper with care to remove some of the
plaster.  As far as the skipping and distortion, there are a number of
possible reasons.  The stylus may be chipped and should be examined with a
microscope, or there may be a mechanical problem with the feed mechanism
itself.  Others on this list may give more specific solutions based on their
experience with this machine.
