Huzzah for that monumental email, Walt!

  LOL...Randy,

You wrote in part, "Edison Rules! Victor Sucks!" to which I am compelled to
reply even though I know that your quotes seem to represent a greater
rhetorical purpose which I respect. But let me have a moment of fun here.

If Edison hadn't ruled exactly as he did, we might, I say, might, have more
than a handful of recording artists who to this day people would readily
recognize. But at the same time, it is that very demanding method of ruling
(whether I like it or not) that underscores the very foundation of his
ingenuity and radical success as an inventor generally. History shows it to
be so just with a quick glance.

Now, as to Victor sucking, they did so with great energy and they most
certainly didn't do it without great effort and talent. They had to royally
suck in order to dominate. That is, not every company had the resources to
even file a patent let alone defend against lawsuits for actual or suspected
patent infringements in a court of law. Consequently, Victor sucked many a
corporate bankroll for all its worth and likely sucked in engineering talent
in the process.

Having worked in the measurement science engineering industry (i.e.
calibration and metrology) for much of my career, and knowing what I do now
about corporate America and the rigor and necessity of applying fundamental
electrical engineering and physics to the measurement processes and
statistical analysis of precision electrical parameters (i.e. the Volt, the
Ohm, the Ampere, the Farad, the Henry, and so on) I believe I would probably
have fit into Edison's organization quite comfortably. I might have been
envious of Victor's corporate diversity (certainly not the wages they paid
their people), but working for an organization led by a hard headed dictator
like Edison would have been a thrill (for me).

As a business model for corporate success and a pretty mahogany cabinet,
I'll take Eldridge Johnson and company. But for a disciplined engineering
model and the itch that only a freshly oiled open mechanism can instigate,
give me Edison. Hence, I agree that "Edison Rules!" and "Victor Sucks!"
History says it must be so.

Although I present some of my thoughts above in a light way, I have had many
discussions about the particular and often seemingly diverse skill sets that
men like Eldridge Johnson and Thomas Edison might very well put forth on a
r?sum?. I don't claim to be any sort of authority on the subject - just a
guy with a passing interest. Thankfully, history gives us a window that
allows us to look into the past as it were, and then without disturbing it,
learn from both men and their contributions to the very culture and
technologies that we embrace today.

I guess I will just keep collecting both.

Walt

p.s. Did you ever wonder where emails go that "never make it" to the
intended recipient? Now if Loran is in charge of THAT place in cyberspace,
then mere censuring and censoring are just small potatoes in a scheme so
grandiose. Loran? LOL...

The only censorship I've seen at work on Phono-L is the self-censorship of
list members, who refrain from making posts that are derogatory towards
other
members, or put forth strongly held opinions in ways that are not
constructive, (Edison Rules! Victor Sucks! etc.)

The folks on this list are very knowledgeable, and are willing to share
their knowledge for the good of the hobby. This is one of the most mature,
and
friendly e-mail lists on the web. I hope the person who complained checked
back
to see the responses to his post.
