With all due respect to your old-time collector friend, Rick, he may have
been the victim of some misinformation that he may have passed along, I'm
afraid. For one thing, the resulting sound quality was just fine on
universal cut records (my E+, rarely-played 9" Emersons sound fabulous),
which have label markings referring to the Smallwood 45 degree angle cut
patent, #639452, without exception. They just didn't last very long in
normal use is all, indeed, because the angle of the cut was uneven and
unable to withstand even stylus pressure from either soundbox position. But
for another, more importantly, I'll have to see it with my own eyes before
I'll believe that both Allan Sutton and Kurt Nauck are wrong when they say
the existence of universal cut Crescents remains unconfirmed, while this
gentleman claimed to have several. (Nothing personal, I assure you!)
Misinformation about such a small, obscure company is certainly easy to find
and difficult to correct when most of us have had to simply fill in the
holes as we went (until the internet came along, at least).

Best,
Robert
