HI John:
I can tell you are not happy with the ebay horn. I say return it bacause you will never be happy with the way the horn is veneered on the outside. Note that Marty's horn, shown on his website,?is split at the bell. Be patient a good horn will come your way. They are not rare. -----Original Message----- From: john robles <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, 11 Jul 2007 12:00 pm Subject: [Phono-L] FInal Determination re Oak Horn Hi All Here is a link to two photos. Horn A is mine, Horn B is on sale by Marty Roenigk. Not the difference - his has staves without the patched in areas that are evident on mine. SO I take it that those long triangular areas on mine (horn A) ARE repairs, correct??? http://s197.photobucket.com/albums/aa39/john9ten/Oak%20Horn/ Thanks!!! But, is it like that all the way around? Looks like veneer repairs, but done very well. What does the inside of the horn look like? Also, your horn has obviously been stripped and refinished. Look at the dark circle around the decal. If you got it off ebay, you got it for what other collectors looking at it were willing to pay. I don't know what Marty Roenigk is selling his for, but it appears all original, and should be substantially more than what you paid for yours. In taking a closer look at your Horn A, what seems a bit odd is that the patched in areas (for the most part) have grain that opposes the direction of the surrounding grain, AND the coloring is different. I would have expected a somewhat more uniform hue to the whole horn. On the other hand, one of these lighter sections has what appears to be an original decal in worn condition, which if it IS original would not be on a section that was patched in more recent years UNLESS the decal was "aged" to give it a more authentic appearance. Beyond these observations, I'm out of my league in determining originality of a Victor wood horn, so hopefully others on this list will add their learned opinions.
