You all are ignoring the question he asked. He wanted to know how to do it. He specifically did not ask about a debate about ethics or supporting zend. If you do not think that it's a good idea "politically" then don't bother him with that.
So either ignore the question or answer the question. Don't answer questions he did not ask or did not want to debate (especially if everybody has heard the argument over and over again) I can say one thing: I am a happy customer of the Zend Encoder. We will probably not use the Zend Accelerator on our own servers, but for obvious reasons (Zend made it impossible for any php script caching to work with encoded files) we would recommend the Zend Accelerator to any customer on his own servers using our encoded php scripts. If there were an open alternative I would consider it because then I would not have to use different php caching systems on our own and on our clients servers. But all in all I am very impressed with the Zend Encoder. We have yet to have a single issue (just requests for simple yet very important features that have been hanging out for over 6 months). And any solution would have to really convince me it is as reliable. Also Zend Encoder has proven itself so far to be fairly good protection (or have I just missed the news?). So with every month the Zend Encoder stays this way I will be more reluctant to consider other solutions since my companies business model depends on a reliable encoder for our php scripts.
