There has been a huge change in pear from version 4.2.0 to the current development branch. The build system is different, etc. I'm afraid that a big indiscriminate MFH could break things. Plus most of the packages that are in php4/pear in 4.2.0 have disappeared in 4.3.0-dev. If you have specific things that should be merged, that would be a different thing altogether.
