There are several options and mediawiki was offered because it's actively developed and feature rich. It's big but what's the downside of having all the available features that we may or may not use? We'd be sure to keep the template as simple as possible. And mediawiki has such nice diffs and changelogs that it's difficult to resist.

and its the one most likely already known to the new user of your
own wiki these days i'd assume ...
