My doctor has been on me about exercising. It is one of my resoultions rather... to try to exercise again. I haven't been, but I will start again - 3 times a week, I will start walking. I used to walk every day - 45 minutes a day - at 5 a.m. The pituitary helps produce the amino acids that are part of the endorphin chains (the feel good chemicals) in our brains. I didn't know this until I stumbled across an article discussing the POMC peptides and the 1000+ amino acids that the gland helps in the processing of, many that science doesn't quite know what they all do. I can understand with pituitary disease that when the POMC is disrupted and the chemical imbalances change... and all of this is on the forefront of endocrine research. I try to read it, but my eyes start glazing over when I read about the mice and the genes and the theories. 'Least there are folks out there that understand the potential impact. The problem is that is no real 'fixing it' right now. For the average patient, many years are spent going to doctor to doctor with a list of symptoms. For many of us with hormone secreting tumors we are told to go on a diet, try psychiatric drugs, that we have chronic fatigue, fibro, etc... For the non functiong patients - headaches - take this, take that. Not enough is taught in medical training about pituitary disease. I know that exercise is hard when your mind tells you that you need to do this (me). It is hard when your body tells you no. It is also hard when your mind and body tell you no. I think that perhaps finding something we can do, and with a friend, that we enjoy, is where the balance is. Always too, check with your doctor. There may be a reason why...and perhaps he/she can help. I plan to get my son to walk with me those three days. He's good company. The weather is mild in my area. Mind over matter. (yeah). My doc really wants me to do weight bearing exercises..... yuck. Mind over matter? I think I'll try the walking first. |
