Dr. Laws is a renowned pituitary surgeon. He still uses the traditional transphenoidal method of removing tumors as far as I know. The difference with Dr. Jho or Dr. Shahinian (I went to Shahinian) is that they are renowned for removing tumors in a newer fully endoscopic technique that is far less invasive, but more importantly, more effective in allowing the physician to see what he is doing. Dr. Shahinian said he would not have been able to see where my tumor had grown (it was outside the sella tursica even though that did not show up on the MRI) if he had used the old transphenoidal method. Shahinian had done about 600 of the traditional surgeries before he developed his own unique instruments to endoscopically remove the tumors. Jho was the first to use endoscopic surgery to operate on pituitary tumors and is also highly recommended. There is no incision above your lip with this method. They enter through the right nostril. I had no swelling, no bruises, no marks on my face whatsoever. You could not tell I had surgery at all...no complication, no spinal tap, no nose packing. I left the hospital 24 hours after coming out of surgery and went to the movies. I believe I was the first person in medical history to leave the hospital the next day after surgery (I had this done in 2000).
