Pituitary tumors and the hormonal imbalance they cause can cause short term memory loss. It can also cause cognitive dysfunction. I have had short term memory loss for several years. I cannot remember what I did ten minutes ago, but I can recall the names of kids in my sixth grade class (16 years ago.) I have a very hard time remembering anything-I write everything down and have post-it notes all over to remind me of everything!
 
Radiation can also cause memory loss. It could be caused by a number of factors. Radiation can damage cells over time-affects are usually not felt for many years.
