If you don't feel comfortable with the surgeon as recommended by your insurance, you can appeal, just as Jean surmised. If you do decide to appeal, research your neurosurgeons. You may need to meet with a few of the neurosurgeons first (out of pocket) to help gain insight on what course of action is best for your particular case.
 
You may have to go out of network for your surgery, and costs may be reimbursed at the higher rate - or not reimbursed at all.
 
Another option is to see if you could qualify for a study at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. If you are accepted into a study, testing and prossible treatment would be for free. You would need to get there though.
