Rick,

I hope your surgery goes well, and that you feel comfortable with the
physician.
I did some'snooping' on account that I like to know which doctors have
helped people. Often times, the surgeons who practice at General Hospitals
don't do alot of article publishing in the academia environment, so the next
thing to consider (from a patient's perspective) is training.

He is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.
He is a board certified neurosurgeon 11-1-2000. To become board certified,
it is a 14+ year process.
He does spine, tumor, and Cerebrovascular. He has been board certified for
about 6 years, so I guess he is in his early to mid 40s.

In his office is Dr. RV Singh, who is in addition to the above societies, a
member of the North American Skull Base Society.

Often times, we tell patients for best outcome, seek the consult of surgeons
who specialize in pituitary neurosurgery. A specialist is considered one who
does from 20 or more pituitary neurosurgeries a year. For young doctors
(yes, for a neurosurgeon 40 is young), a patient can also ask about where
the surgeon was trained, how many pituitary neurosurgical cases he does a
year, and general patient care type questions re: will someone be assisting
in the surgery, will there be observers, what kind of approach does the
surgeon feel is best in your case, (and why). Additional questions are how
long your hospital stay is, if you will need to do some endocrine testing
pre-op and who will be handling your endocrine care in the hospital and who
will you see after.

You can also ask the question re: what happens if the tumor is found to be
invasive, and he can't get it all - what is the next step?

I couldn't find him on the AMA listing, so he has either moved in from
another state or another country.

He does Cerebrovascular and in my mind, I call those "bleeders". This tells
me he has had training somewhere in trauma. I then went to pubmed and looked
up mitchell p. neurosurgery in the search line. I also looked up Ran Vijai
Singh... as Singh rv (he is in their practice).

Hmmm...
There is a connection from the UK with a Singh RV and a Mitchell P. This Dr.
Mitchell is pretty well published for a "youngster" 9 articles since 1999.

Dunno... the internet is a great thing, but, you have to be the judge. The
face to face connection can go a long way. Just take your opportunities to
ensure you are in competent hands. If that internal voice bothers you in
any way... seek another opinion or two. In any case, we are behind you and
are supporting you through surgery and a full recovery. The 'suggestions' re
doctors are just folks caring about you, and wanting and wishing for you the
best!

Big hugs!
Minnie
