----------------------------------------------------------- New Message on Pituitary Chat
----------------------------------------------------------- From: MinnieChat Message 10 in Discussion They took the paper off the web, go figure. I did find a summary of the study on a German site: http://www.innovations-report.de/html/berichte/medizin_gesundheit/bericht-14030.html But, the interview with Dr. Melmed is missing. What got the patients interest is that the top centers were touting an 80-90% surgical remission rate when this article came out. My surgeon said that 84% was the average remission rate for Cushings patients. The study that Dr. Kelley published a few years ago, had remission rates with the endoscopic approach in the upper 70th percentile. As always, it depends on the tumor presentation, and the skill of the surgeon. I recommend you do your own research with pubmed. There are some really top notch pituituary neurosurgeons who are fantastic at endoscopic minimally invasive surgery... but if you have a microscopic ACTH secreting tumor... you need to see a highly skilled neurosurgeon who can pull out all of the technology that is available to her/him. I have a friend who saw such a surgeon on the east coast. He was an excellent minimally invasive pitutiary surgeon, but... it took an expert pituitary neurosurgeon and a third surgery to put her in remission. I suggest you talk with alot of doctors. It really sucks. I have had my cushings recur as well. At some point, I will also choose to do another surgery. It ain't easy.
