It sounds like it would be better to write the action Bart suggested,
instead of introducing arbitrary scripting all over again.


You've just been given a perfect case, in your own "house", of why, when there is something that needs doing that is unique to a specific package/software, arbitrary scripting is a GOOD THING. But rather than finally acceptting and admitting that, you (sun) are pointing back to the new dogma of "arbitrary scripting is bad".

Good engineering, should not be subject to arbitrary dogma. Good software engineering should be customer focused, and flexible enough to adjust design when real needs have been demonstrated.

This is a real need. It's time to adjust the design, and drop the dogma.
