The client doesn't know what type of image it is until we find it, and
this whole thread is about controlling the behaviour of finding
images. That's the whole point of contention here.

find_root() knows whether an image is a user image or not so
it could take into account the image type when doing the search.

Either I'm missing what you're saying or you're missing what I'm saying.

I think we have differing perspectives on what the problem is.

The point of contention here is that we attempt to find images at a point other than '/' by default.

And I say maybe that isn't the issue. Maybe the issue is
how find_root() determines what image contains the path
provided to it.

I think one could change find_root() so that the original
poster would not have hit his problem while preserving
the behavior we (or at least those of us that use user
images) desire for user images.

How does knowing the image type help at all?
