I think one could change find_root() so that the original
poster would not have hit his problem while preserving
the behavior we (or at least those of us that use user
images) desire for user images.
While that would have solved the original poster's specific issue, it
doesn't address the issue raised by others. With that said, only
allowing full images to be rooted at '/' is something that can be
discussed as part of the changes wanted for this thread.
