There may be a font you could load on the console, but I don't know.

Ah.. Didn't think to check for that.
I was able to boot it up, and it looks to me like umlauts do display
properly with the vga font- they do look like crap without it,
unfortunately.
I'm attaching screenshots of the screen with the "vga" and a normal
"fixed" font for reference.
I suppose it would be possible to add an option to remap some of the
characters to make it look more presentable when the vga font isn't
present. Perhaps i'll look into that.
